Fundamental Rights Impact Assessment (FRIA)
Fundamental Rights Impact Assessment: an assessment required by the AI Act for high-risk AI systems.
A FRIA is an assessment of the impact of an artificial intelligence system on the fundamental rights of individuals. The AI Act (Art. 27) requires it for high-risk AI systems deployed by public bodies and certain private entities, for example in recruitment or creditworthiness assessment.
A FRIA is related to a DPIA under GDPR, but its scope is broader: it covers not only data protection but the full spectrum of fundamental rights, including the risk of discrimination and the absence of meaningful human oversight.
In practice, a FRIA begins with an inventory of AI systems and the assignment of a risk class to each. Without that step it is impossible to know which systems require an assessment at all. The outcome determines what additional obligations apply, such as documentation requirements, monitoring, and human oversight mechanisms.
